As the global economy is largely driven by the Internet and cloud technology, Edge Computing will become a local extension of the cloud to enable the digital world to exist over the next decade in the face of increasing demand for bandwidth.

The fact

In this age of intelligent objects and with the arrival of 5G, data processing will get closer to the users.

With Edge Computing, it is not a question of relocating data storage and processing to servers hundreds of kilometers away. It is a question of processing them as close as possible to the need and use. In this way, the latency and costs generated by data traffic can be reduced. This is essential in view of the growing number of connected objects and data exchanged around the world.

To support this, in December 2019, Amazon Web Services announced that it would build “local data centers” near major cities to manage workloads and reduce latency.

According to Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, tomorrow’s IT applications will first be operated on a local network and then transferred to the cloud to feed “machine learning” technologies. A “machine learning” that will bring back learning in proximity for increased performance!

The decoding

Over the next decade, there could be as many as 50 billion connected objects generating huge amounts of data to be processed. From virtual reality applications to stand-alone cars, Edge Computing will be used for all digital activities.

A concrete case in point is the increasing demand for bandwidth during containment related to Covid-19 with a growing number of people connected to streaming platforms such as Disney+, Youtube, Netflix or online games such as Fortnite. ISPs have indicated that they will adjust the bandwidth of these services so as not to compromise the rest of the Internet.

With Edge Computing, proximity servers and computing power located as close as possible to users can free up bandwidth from this type of constraint. It is also an opportunity to provide a better gaming experience with reduced latency for Fortnite players.

We can then imagine that the computing power of our smartphones will be at the heart of this new IT structure within 10 years to offer an unprecedented experience around technologies such as image recognition, augmented or virtual reality.

This is quite close to Huawei‘s philosophy with its 1+8+N concept thanks to the arrival of the 5G. The mobile becomes the heart of the digital ecosystem.

Edge Computing will become the engine of tomorrow’s Internet and the intelligence of the objects that will make the digital world work!
